As part of the Rebuild Illinois Capital Program the I-55 bridge over the Kankakee River received major improvements which consisted of a 3-unit, 12-span structure which was constructed with PPC I beams and in addition, a reinforced concrete deck was rehabilitated. The existing expansion joints were replaced with a shallow joint strip seal. The shallow removal depth did not expose the top of the PPC I beam reducing construction cost, duration, and the likelihood of damage. Floor drain extensions were also added to help protect the beams. The roadway shoulders were reconstructed to accommodate the high volume of truck traffic. Alternate route signing and the use of a Smart Traffic Monitory System were implemented to minimize impacts to commuters.
