SE3 served as a subconsultant providing Phase II Engineering Services for the reconstruction and widening of I-80 at the Center Street and Chicago Street interchanges.

Phase II Services, Center Street Construction: The interchange comprised of a ramp realignment which required six Maintenance of Traffic stages which included temporary pavement to maintain traffic flow during construction. The Des Plaines River Bridge contract included building a new I-80 bridge over the Des Plaines River offset from the old bridge, I-80 likewise was realigned and reconfigured at the Center St. interchange. Several neighborhood streets north of I-80 were shortened and turned into cul-de-sacs in a separate construction contract. The drainage improvements included the construction of a stormwater detention pond and new storm sewers and drainage ditches. SE3’s Scope of Work: Provided staged erosion control plans for each stage of construction and the storm water pollution prevention plan.

Des Plaines River Bridge: Included building a new I-80 bridge over the Des Plaines River offset from the old bridge, I-80 likewise was realigned/reconfigured at the Chicago Street interchange. In addition, a new runaround was constructed at the Chicago Street interchange to improve traffic efficiency. Drainage improvements consisted of two stormwater detention ponds and new storm sewer systems and drainage ditches. SE3’s Scope of Work: Development of staged erosion control plans for each stage of construction, the storm water pollution prevention plan, and two MSE walls each on Ramp A and Ramp C, one soldier pile retaining wall on Ramp AA, and one CIP wall on Chicago Street. The soldier pile retaining walls had a tangent and radius geometry layout with both anchorage slabs on top of the soldier pile wall and on grade. The proposed structures were designed in accordance with AASHTO-LRFD specifications. Project included preparation of TS&L plans, PS&E Engineering plans, estimates and constructability for soldier pile retaining wall structure based on the right-of-way limitation and stage construction. The proposed structure was 544 feet long with a maximum retained height of 15 ft. exposed height soldier pile wall with a radial pile configuration with an anchorage slab. The soldier piles were W24 and W18 sections to limit the deflection with drilled shafts set in soil and rock sockets. Aesthetic enhancement included a cast-in-place concrete veneer. SE3 was also responsible for establishing vertical/horizontal limits, design, and foundation layouts of proposed retaining walls to confirm stage construction, existing utility retention / safeguard and right-of-way constraints were not compromised.
