Illinois State Route 64, also known as North Avenue, runs east and west through DuPage County and is a vital route which carries motorists to their destination. SE3 was awarded the Design Contract by the Illinois Department of Transportation that consisted of roadway improvements to lengthen the dual left turn storage lanes at each intersection of the I-355 interchange in addition to structural improvements for bridge joint replacement and bridge deck overlay.

The widening to lengthen the left turn storage lanes was completed where grass medians were located. A critical aspect of the project was to minimize impact to motorists throughout construction. SE3 Engineers studied complex Maintenance Of Traffic scenarios and analyzed the resulting queues to provide a solution that caused the least amount of delay to motorists. A queue analysis was performed utilizing Synchro/SimTraffic due to the number of and proximity of signalized intersections throughout the project corridor.

Drainage analysis was completed to verify inlet spacing requirements were met due to the increase in roadway pavement. Storm sewer networks were modeled to verify the sewers had capacity for drainage. SE3 prepared the contract plans, special provisions, and cost estimate. Project specifications, budget, and project schedule requirements were met. As of 2017, IL St. Rt. 64 experienced 129,500 cars in average daily traffic.
