More than 300,000 vehicles travel the Central Tri-State Tollway I-294, 22-mile Corridor daily. As part of the Central Tri-State Tollway I-294 Design Corridor Management Team, SE3 oversaw the design of 22 miles of widening and reconstruction. This work took place in the Village of Bridgeview as well as neighboring communities from 95th St. to Balmoral Ave. and includes 21 design consultant teams.

Project components included:

  • Two Advanced Bridge Repair Contracts
  • Advanced Storm Sewer Cleaning and Televising Contract
  • Advanced Wall Construction Contracts
  • 53 Mainline Bridges
    • Mile Long Bridge
    • BNSF over I-294
    • Bensenville Yard Bridges
  • 20 Cross Road Bridges
  • Nine Culverts

SE3 provided a Project Manager Liaison for the Mile Long Bridge, BNSF over I-294 bridge in addition to various design upon request sections. SE3 personnel coordinated Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) impacts, oversaw risk management, coordination of field work, and developed and maintained the CTS DCM Dashboard. SE3 personnel also provided major contributions for corridor wide development of the Structure and Intelligent Transportation System disciplines.

A critical component of the Corridor was the Mile Long Bridge which consists of 27 spans of both steel and pre-cast concrete superstructures. This bridge crosses the CN Railroad, I&M Canal, Forest Preserve District of Cook County, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District LASMA Island, Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Des Plaines River, BNSF Main Railroad Tracks, BNSF Intermodal Yard, and the local industrial corridor. This work took place in neighboring communities from 95th St. to Balmoral Avenue.

SE3 coordinated the following between Illinois Tollway, IDOT, and other outside agencies:

  • Milestone Submittals
  • Jurisdiction and Intergovernmental Agreements
  • Design Permitting
  • Construction Permitting
  • Land Discussions
  • Review of Specific Corridor Design
  • Earthwork Management
  • Contractor Staging Areas

SE3 personnel also developed and coordinated the Maintenance of Traffic for the middle segment of the corridor which included four construction contracts. SE3 assisted with refining the contract plans and specifications for two construction contracts within this segment.
